- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: 6.1 x 5.11 x 0.24 inches (unfolded); 6.1 x 2.64 x 0.53 inches (folded); 8.92 oz
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: 6.1 x 5.12 x 0.24 inches (unfolded); 6.1*2.64*0.24 inches (folded); 9.28 oz
After the 2022 redesign, Samsung has kept the design pretty much the same for the 2023 Fold 5 with just a few key changes. Overall, the Fold 5 is slightly thinner and lighter than the Fold 4. Weight has dropped from 9.28 ounces to 8.92 ounces, while the narrowest point on the Fold 5 is just 0.53 inches.
The main — and long-awaited — design change is a new hinge that allows the device to close flat. This helps to give the phone a much nicer look.
There is a triple rear camera system and two more selfie cameras (one on the inner screen and one on the cover screen). The Z Fold 5 comes in Blue, Black, Cream Gray and Blue, while the Z Fold 4 comes in Grey, Black, Burgundy and Beige.
Screen of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 4
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Internal screen: 7.6 inches, resolution 1812*2176 and 120 Hz, maximum brightness 1750 nits. Cover screen: 6.2 inches, resolution 2316 x 904, 120 Hz, maximum brightness 1750 nits
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Internal screen: 7.6 inches, resolution 1812×2176 and 120 Hz, maximum brightness 1300 nits. Cover screen: 6.2 inches, resolution 2316 x 904, 120 Hz, maximum brightness 1500 nits
The screen size is one of the things that are the same in these two phones. Samsung has retained the 7.6-inch internal display and the 6.2-inch cover display. Resolution is similar, but the Z Fold 5 offers a higher maximum brightness of 1,750 nits on its internal panel, which is more than 30 percent brighter.
The higher peak brightness makes the Fold 5’s internal display provide a comfortable viewing experience in bright conditions, such as outdoors under sunlight. The phone should also be a bit more durable as it uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back, ditching the older Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the Z Fold 4.
On both devices, scrolling should be smooth, with support for 120Hz adaptive refresh rates on internal and on-screen displays.
Camera of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 4
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: 50MP f/1.8 primary; 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide with 123-degree FOV; 10 MP f/2.4 telephoto with 3x optical zoom. 4-megapixel f/1.8 internal selfie camera under the display; Selfie camera with a 10-megapixel f/2.2 cover screen
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: 50MP f/1.8 primary; 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide with 123-degree FOV; 10 MP f/2.4 telephoto with 3x optical zoom. 4-megapixel f/1.8 internal selfie camera under the display; Selfie camera with a 10-megapixel f/2.2 cover screen
Samsung has made a few changes to the Fold 5’s camera setup, and whether you buy the new model or the outgoing Fold 4, you’ll get the same lenses.
A triple rear camera system (a 50-megapixel main lens, a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom), followed by a 4-megapixel under-display selfie camera inside and another 10-megapixel in-screen selfie camera There is a cover display.
It’s possible that Samsung felt the Fold 4’s camera was good enough after receiving a significant upgrade over the Z Fold 3 in 2021.
And the company may be justified – according to our Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 review , image quality is fantastic, with plenty of detail and color. The camera is reliable both in daylight and at night. With the same lenses, expect the same experience.
Processor of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 phones
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy; Adreno 740 GPU
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1; Adreno 730 GPU
Under the hood, the Z Fold 5 runs the same chip that powered all of Samsung’s 2023 S23 series flagship devices. Unlike the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the version offered with a slightly higher clock speed (3.36 GHz vs. 3.2 GHz) and GPU (719 MHz vs. 680 MHz) offers better performance. So if you need more power in a fold, the Fold 5 should be your choice.
On the other hand, Qualcomm’s 1st generation Snapdragon 8+ powers the Z Fold 4. Like the 2nd generation Snapdragon 8 for Galaxy , this device is manufactured on a 4nm die. The clock speed is slightly slower, but overall it has enough power to run the Fold 4 without any problems.
There’s unlikely to be much of a difference between the two, but with the higher performance figures, you’d expect slightly better performance in the Z Fold 5.
Comparison of RAM and Storage Space of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 phones
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: 12GB RAM; 256GB/512GB/1TB
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: 12GB RAM; 256GB/512GB/1TB
Whichever you choose, 12GB of storage comes as standard. The same goes for storage, where you choose between 256GB, 512GB or 1TB. 256GB is the lowest option, which is great for tablet-sized devices like the Z Fold 4 or 5, where media consumption and productivity may be two of your main uses.
There is no development gap in either device, which has become common for many high-end smartphones. Despite the similarities, the Fold 5 sets itself apart by using UFS 4.0 storage technology, which offers better read and write speeds than the UFS 3.1 used in the Fold 4.
Battery of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 4
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: 4400mAh; 25 watts wired; wireless 15 watt; 4.5W reverse wireless charging
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: 4400mAh; 25 watts wired; wireless 15 watt; 4.5W reverse wireless charging
Since the Z Fold 5 is slightly lighter, you’d think Samsung might have cut back on the battery capacity a bit. It is not so. The 4400 mAh battery retains its predecessor.
Other specifications are the same. 25W fast charging is available via USB-C. With it, you only need half an hour to charge your device from zero to 50%. Wireless charging is available, but is capped at 15W. And both devices support reverse wireless charging, so you can effortlessly charge other Samsung devices that offer wireless charging.
Is it time to buy a foldable phone?
The Z Fold 5 starts at $1,799, the same starting price as the Z Fold 4. The changes between the fourth and fifth generations are subtle but significant, with the main changes being a revised hinge, a brighter display, and a new processor. Minimal changes indicate the maturity of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series.
The Qold 5 looks to be a great device for first-time folding buyers. You no longer have to worry about hinges or screens, the main culprits affecting the durability of foldable phones. So if you’ve been hesitating to buy a foldable phone since the beginning, now is the time to get one.
