best foldable phones

We’ve seen some big changes in the best foldable phones over the past few months. An area that was previously dominated by Samsung, there is now a new competition among these phones with the emergence of new brands of foldable phones, resulting in more variety for buyers of these phones to choose from.

Best foldable phones of 2023, buying guide

Foldable phones are no longer only offered by the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip models. Google, OnePlus and Motorola are competing here – Motorola even makes several foldable devices. And the increasing competition has raised the bar for these types of phones as several phone manufacturers compete to make the best foldable phone.

Here’s what we think of the various competitors, along with our recommendations on which foldable you should buy based on our extensive testing and comparison.

The OnePlus Open is the best foldable phone you can buy, thanks to its large display, great performance and overall value. It’s $100 less than foldable laptops like Samsung and Google notebooks, which is a step in the right direction considering the high prices these types of phones command.

OnePlus didn’t cut too many corners to keep the price down, as the Open takes great photos for the most part. (The exception is in low-light settings.) We also appreciate Open Canvas’s multitasking features, which let you run multiple programs simultaneously in any window size you want. OnePlus seems to understand that the great thing about foldable phones is that they double as tablets, and they should.

As for displays, the main 7.8-inch screen is the biggest you can get on a foldable right now, although the OnePlus Open hinge keeps the phone slim and light overall. It really is a great device that takes the entire folding market forward.

Samsung hasn’t changed much about the Galaxy Z Fold 5 over the Galaxy Z Fold 4, but it’s enough of an improvement for Samsung to edge out an up-and-coming device like the Pixel Fold for a near-top slot.

With a new flex hinge that makes the Galaxy Z Fold 5 lighter and easier to hold flat, plus improvements to the phone’s camera, main display, performance and multitasking capabilities, it’s ahead of most phones as an all-rounder. The optional S Pen’s foldable quality adds to the appeal, as you can use the pen to be more productive on Samsung’s ultimate portable device.

Main screen size:  6.9 inches (1080*2640)
Secondary screen size:  3.6 inches (1066*1056)
CPU:  Snapdragon 8 Plus 1st generation
RAM/Memory:  8/256 GB
Unfolded size:  0.27*2.9*6.7 inches
Size, package:  0.59*2.9*3.48 inches
Weight:  6.6 oz

Reasons to buy

  • beautiful design
  • Fast battery charging
  • Accurate external display

Reasons to avoid buying

  • Poor camera performance in low light
  • Some apps don’t scale well on external screens

Motorola tried a few times, but it finally has a foldable phone that can compete with Samsung products. And not just the competition – we think the Motorola Razr+ tops the Galaxy Z Flip 5 as the device to get if you’re after a flip phone.

What puts the Razr+ ahead of the Z Flip 5 is the large display that Motorola has put on the phone. At 3.6 inches and crisp, it’s big enough to run apps without opening the phone. When you do, a large 6.9-inch screen awaits you, and you can pick up where you left off with the apps you were using on the outer screen. It’s easy to move the phone around when it snaps shut, and the sturdy hinge mechanism allows the Razr+ to stay flat when you open it.

Some may object to the older processor in the Razr+, though it’s the same chipset found in the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Secondary screen size:  5.8 inches (1080*2092)
CPU: Tensor G2
RAM/Storage:  12GB/256GB, 512GB
Unfolded size: 0.2*5.5*6.2 inches
Size, package:  0.5*3.1*5.5 inches
Weight:  10 oz

Reasons to buy

  • Wide front display
  • Visual multitasking
  • Powerful cameras

Reasons to avoid buying

  • It has the same price as the Galaxy Z Fold 4
  • Performance lags behind other top flagship phones

The Google Pixel Fold has been overshadowed by Samsung’s latest foldable phones, but the fact that Google managed to do well on its first attempt at a foldable phone is impressive.

The Pixel Fold stands out with a 5.8-inch front-facing display that’s easy to use (and easy to type on), the slimmest design ever on a fold when open, and an ultra-smooth hinge that feels natural.

Other highlights include a stellar camera system that includes a 48-megapixel primary sensor and 5x telephoto zoom with excellent low-light performance. We also like the intuitive software for dual-screen multitasking, useful desktop and tent modes, and a suite of apps optimized for the large 7.6-inch built-in display. The Tensor G2’s chip performance could be faster and the bezels smaller, but overall it’s a great flip phone for those willing to pay more.

The most affordable foldable phone

Main screen size:  6.9 inches (1080*2640)
Secondary screen size:  1.5 inches (194*368)
CPU:  Snapdragon 7 generation 1
RAM/Storage memory:  8/128 GB
Unfolded size:  0.29*2.9*6.7 inches
Size, package:  0.62*2.9*3.5 inches
Weight:  6.7 oz

Reasons to buy

  • The cheapest foldable ever made
  • Great design
  • Long lasting battery

Reasons to avoid buying

  • Small cover screen
  • Older Snapdragon 7 generation 1 chip

If the price of flip phones gives you sticker shock, you’ll be happy to see the Motorola Razr (2023)’s $699 asking price. Motorola has removed a few key features from the Motorola+ to deliver a more affordable flip phone that still looks good and performs well.

The biggest changes include the chipset – Motorola opts for the less powerful Snapdragon system-on-chip here – and the external display, which is now just a 1.5-inch strip. This will frustrate anyone who likes to use a foldable screen to get things done, but others may happily accept the sacrifice if they pay hundreds of dollars less.

The plant-based leather on the outside of the Motorola Razr makes it easy to hold, and the cameras put up a decent fight with rivals like the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Polish, they will be happy to make the change.

Technical Specifications

Main screen size:  6.7 inches (1080*2640)
Secondary screen size:  3.4 inches (720*748)
CPU:  Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy
RAM/Storage:  8GB/256GB, 512GB
Unfolded size:  0.27*2.8*6.5 inches
Size, package:  0.59*2.83*3.35 inches
Weight:  6.6 oz

Reasons to buy

  • The Flex window is much more versatile
  • Great photography
  • Base storage has been doubled

Reasons to avoid buying

  • Poor battery life
  • Flex Window is mostly limited to widgets

Unfortunately for Samsung, it doesn’t make the best flip-style folding anymore. But the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is still a worthy product thanks to its upgrades.

The small front screen is now replaced by a much more usable flexible window, although you’ll only use it more for app widgets than full use. The cameras are still strong, and with other upgrades in design, battery life, and chip power, it’s still worth shortlisting. If it wasn’t so repetitive, it could become a hero like its predecessors.

What to look for in a foldable phone

Before buying a flip phone, you should consider what this type of device can do for you that a standard phone can’t. With the exception of the $699 Motorola Razr, most foldable devices still cost $1,000 or more. Unless you really need the extra screen, you might be better off with a phablet or one of the other best large phones  we’ve tested.

If you think a flip phone will help you do more, be sure to pay attention to the structure of the device. Early foldable phones like the Galaxy Fold and the original Motorola Razr had quirky design features that drove us to move on these phones. However, with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in 2020, Samsung made important changes that made the phone stand up to everyday use, and that continued with subsequent models. After adding water resistance to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung worked on a lighter and slimmer hinge for its latest foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5.

There are two screens to consider when shopping for a flip phone – the larger internal screen and a secondary screen that is usually on the outside of the device. See exactly what you can do with that outer screen – can you run full apps or is it just there for notifications and a few other features? And does the screen support something like Samsung’s persistence feature where the app you’re using on the screen is waiting for you when you unlock the device?

Aside from size – you need to make sure that a flip phone is something that’s comfortable to carry – you’re looking at a lot of criteria that you use to judge regular phones. This includes the processor, cameras and – most notably – battery life. After all, there are usually multiple screens to keep a flip phone on.

How we test foldable phones

We test the best flip phones the same way we test any smartphone. (See our look at how Tom’s Guide tests and reviews smartphones for a more detailed explanation of our process.) We run lab tests, including synthetic benchmarks like Geekbench 5 and 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited, to measure graphics performance. We also run a real video encoding test on each phone using Adobe Premiere Rush and time the result.

To measure the quality of the phone’s display, we conduct laboratory tests to determine the brightness of the panel (in nits) as well as the colorfulness of each screen (DCI-P3 color gamut). In these cases, higher numbers are better. We also measure each panel’s color accuracy with a Delta-E rating, where lower numbers are better and a score of 0 is perfect.

We run a custom battery test where we force the phone to surf the web via mobile with its screen at 150 nits of brightness. Then we time how long it takes to charge the phone. For foldable phones, we perform this test on the main screen of the phone.

We also test each flip phone’s cameras and take them out into the field for comparison shots, usually with another device with similar specs. In some cases, it’s a flip phone or another device at the same price level.

Unveiling of OpenAI new artificial intelligence capabilities

OpenAI claims that its free GPT-4o model can talk, laugh, sing, and see like a human. The company is also releasing a desktop version of ChatGPT’s large language model.

Unveiling of OpenAI new artificial intelligence capabilities

Yesterday, OpenAI introduced the GPT-4o artificial intelligence model, which is a completely new model of the company’s artificial intelligence, which according to OpenAI is a step closer to a much more natural human-computer interaction.
This new model accepts any combination of text, audio, and image as input and can produce output in all three formats. It can also detect emotions, allow the user to interrupt it mid-speech, and respond almost as quickly as a human during a conversation.
In the live broadcast of the introduction of this new model, Meera Moratti, Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, said: “The special thing about GPT-4o is that GPT-4 level intelligence has been made available to everyone, including our free users. This is the first time we’ve taken a big step forward in ease of use.
During the unveiling of the model, OpenAI demonstrated the GPT-4o, which translates live between English and Italian, with its intuitive ability to help a researcher solve a linear equation on paper in an instant, just by listening to The breaths of an OpenAI executive give him advice on deep breathing.
The letter “o” in the name of the GPT-4o model stands for the word “Omni”, which is a reference to the multifaceted capabilities of this model.
OpenAI said that GPT-4o is trained with text, images, and audio, meaning all input and output is processed by a neural network. This differs from the company’s previous models, including the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, which allowed users to ask questions just by speaking, but then converted the speech to text. This would cause tone and emotion to be lost and interactions to slow down.
OpenAI will make this new model available for free to everyone, including ChatGPT users, over the next few weeks, and will also initially release a desktop version of ChatGPT for Apple computers (Mac) for users who have purchased a subscription, starting today. They will have access to it. The introduction of the new OpenAI model took place one day before the Google I/O event, which is the company’s annual developer conference.
OpenAI
It should be noted that shortly after OpenAI introduced GPT-4o, Google also presented a version of its artificial intelligence known as Gemini with similar capabilities.
While the GPT-4 model excelled at tasks related to image and text analysis, the GPT-4o model integrates speech processing and expands its range of capabilities.

Natural human-computer interaction

According to OpenAI, the GPT-4o model is a step towards a much more natural human-computer interaction that accepts any combination of text, audio, and image as input and produces any combination of text, audio and image.
This model can respond to voice inputs in less than 232 milliseconds, with an average speed of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to the response time of humans in a conversation.
This model matches the performance of the GPT-4 Turbo model on English text and code with a significant improvement in converting text to non-English languages while being much faster and 50% cheaper via application programming interface (API). The GPT-4o model is especially better in visual and audio understanding compared to existing models.

What exactly does the introduction of this model mean for users?

The GPT-4o model significantly enhances the experience of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s wildly popular AI chatbot. Users can now interact with ChatGPT like a personal assistant, ask it questions and even hang it up wherever they want.
Additionally, as mentioned, OpenAI is introducing a desktop version of ChatGPT along with a revamped user interface.
“We recognize the increasing complexity of these models, but our goal is to make the interaction experience more intuitive and seamless,” Moratti emphasized. We want users to focus on working with GPT instead of being distracted by the UI. Our new model can reason text, audio, and video in real-time. This model is versatile, fun to work with, and a step toward a much more natural form of human-computer interaction, and even human-computer-computer interaction.
The GPT-4o model has also been extensively reviewed by more than 70 experts in areas such as social psychology, bias and fairness, and misinformation to identify risks introduced or enhanced by the newly added methods. OpenAI has used these learnings to develop safety interventions to improve the safety of interacting with GPT-4o. The members of the OpenAI team demonstrated their audio skills during the public presentation of this new model. A researcher named Mark Chen emphasized its ability to gauge emotions and noted its adaptability to user interruptions.
Chen demonstrated the model’s versatility by requesting a bedtime story in a variety of tones, from dramatic to robotic, and even had it read to him. As mentioned, this new model is available for free to all ChatGPT users. Until now, GPT-4 class models were only available to people who paid a monthly subscription.
“This is important to us because we want to make great AI tools available to everyone,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Strong market for generative artificial intelligence

OpenAI is leading the way in productive AI alongside Microsoft and Google, as companies across sectors rush to integrate AI-powered chatbots into their services to stay competitive.
For example, Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, recently unveiled its first corporate proposal to Apple to provide a free program for iPhones.
“We recognize that GPT-4o audio presentations present new risks,” OpenAI said in a statement. Today we’re publicly releasing text and image inputs and text outputs, and in the coming weeks and months, we’ll be working on the technical infrastructure, post-training usability, and security necessary to release other methods. For example, at startup, audio outputs are limited to a set of predefined sounds and adhere to our existing security policies. We will share more details about the full range of GPT-4o methods in a future system.
OpenAI
According to the report, the generative AI market saw a staggering $29.1 billion in investment across nearly 700 deals in 2023, up more than 260 percent from the previous year. Predictions indicate that the yield of this market will exceed one trillion dollars in the next decade. However, there are concerns about the rapid deployment of untested services by academics and ethicists who are troubled by the technology’s potential to perpetuate prejudice.
Since launching in November 2022, ChatGPT’s chatbot has broken records as the fastest-growing user base in history, with nearly 100 million weekly active users. OpenAI reports that more than 92% of the world’s top 500 companies use it.
At the presentation event last night, Moratti answered some questions from the audience and when he spoke in fluent Italian and the artificial intelligence translated his words into English, the hall was filled with excitement.
There is more. This means the next time you take a selfie, OpenAI’s artificial intelligence can assess your exact emotions. All you have to do is select a selfie and ask ChatGPT to tell you how you feel.
It should be said that OpenAI employees were so happy that ChatGPT asked them why they were so happy!
